Diabetes Specialist Nurse 
Claire Culshaw

The DSN Clinic was established in 2024 by Claire Culshaw who is the first Advanced Clinical/Nurse Practitioner specialising in Diabetes in Wirral, with both primary and secondary care experience as a Diabetes Specialist Nurse.

Claire has a nursing background in acute medicine beginning with experience on an acute medical unit, including urgent assessment, diagnosis and treatment.

Claire then went on to be an Inpatient Diabetes Specialist Nurse providing acute intervention for inpatients with diabetes, training and education for trust wide staff members and expert clinical advice to medics & nursing colleagues on hospital wards.​

In 2023 Claire moved into primary care to enable an enhanced diabetes service for patients in GP practices across PCN's in Wirral. Claire has initiated and implemented the DIAST Model which is a nationally recognised Diabetes Integrated Advanced Specialist Team Model for general practice and community care which provides NHS patients with specialist nurse input and a wider support network for their diabetes management. ​

Claire has a Masters Degree in Advanced Clinical Practice to consolidate her passion for learning with already a number of MSc modules in her portfolio including; Diabetes Complexity of Care, Clinical Examination, Clinical Decision Making, Research & Audit, Leadership, Advanced Practice and Independent NM Prescribing.
